Dr Stephen Morris
I've been a UK Trustee of Mothers of Africa from the very beginning, since 2005. I'm an Obstetric Anaesthetist in the UK and to be honest, I got the whole thing straight away: women were dying in childbirth and often quite unnecessarily.
As I speak French I went on some of the early teaching visit to Benin and Togo and quickly saw the challenges faced by clinicians in Africa. These countries are under-resourced, as there are very few trained staff and little equipment the struggle to provide good care is enormous. Mothers of Africa concentrates on education provision, now in communities and schools as well as in hospitals, because education is sustainable for the future.
