Sewing

With solar power introduced to the village, Mothers of Africa collaborator and fundraiser, Maggie Cullinane, recognised an opportunity to teach villagers sewing skills from which they might be able to generate income.

Maggie persuaded Janome to donate simple, electrically powered sewing machines which were taken out to Shiyala.

Maggie of Cardiff School of Art and Design, Cardiff Metropolitan University, ran a number of inspiring  workshops,  teaching the Shiyala women basic sewing skills, pattern making and use of the sewing machines.

This enabled the women not only to sew clothes for their own family, but to sew school uniforms for sale to neighboring schools. With this project we have used community engagement to strengthen community action; to ensure inclusive participation.
